Who are we?

Alness Transition Town Group is a network of local people who are working together to build a low carbon, sustainable community for the future here in Alness.

With the imminent threats of climate change combined with peak oil, a worldwide food crisis and a foundering economic system, it is clear that we need to make changes in the way we live our lives in the future. This gives us a great opportunity to come together as a community to build a way of life that is not only sustainable but is potentially much more creative and satisfying …

Our history

It started in December 2007 when several local residents and business people got together to talk about ways we could cut down on energy usage and our reliance on fossil fuels, cut down on waste and support viable local food production. We were introduced to the Transition Town Initiative – a movement where communities come together to create a sustainable, low carbon town or village for the future.

“The thinking behind transition initiatives is not new, but the focus is. It is no longer about how we can save the planet, but how we can save ourselves. Energy descent has been compared to the problem of accessing a beach. Do we run full-pelt over the cliff edge and wait for the crash or do we find an alternative route that can get us there more gradually and safely?” Rob Hopkins – founder of the Transition Town movement

Our structure

We are a constituted group with a free membership which is open to all.

It is our intention to be as open, transparent and inclusive as possible. All our meetings are publicised in advance and all are welcome to attend.

What do we do?

Our aims are

· To raise awareness of the issues associated with the twin challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change and the consequent need to develop a low carbon, sustainable future through ethical, social, cultural, economic, environmental and community action.

· To promote, encourage and support the development of education and research concerning areas affected by resource depletion.

· To provide the membership, other groups, and individuals with the encouragement and support necessary to make the transition to a low carbon, sustainable, ethical future.
